BIOGRAPHY

Hsu Tseng-Hung, born in Shanghai in 1935, carved a significant niche in the world of Hong Kong cinema, particularly within the Wuxia genre. After starting his career at Nanguo Studio, he joined Shaw Brothers in 1964, where he honed his skills as an assistant director on classics like *The Butterfly Chalice* (1965) and *Tiger Boy* (1966). His directorial debut, *Temple of the Red Lotus* (1965), not only marked the studio's first foray into color Wuxia but also set the stage for its sequels, *Twin Swords* (1965) and *The Sword and the Lute* (1967), which remain coveted titles among collectors for their pioneering visual style and storytelling. Hsu's later work with Golden Harvest culminated in the iconic *Zatoichi Meets the One-Armed Swordsman* (1971), a culturally significant mashup that resonates with collectors for its unique blend of Eastern cinematic traditions. This film is sought after not just for its innovative direction but also for its role in bridging the gap between Hong Kong and Japanese cinema. Hsu's films are treasures in the physical media realm, representing a pivotal era of Hong Kong filmmaking that enthusiasts eagerly seek to preserve in their collections.
