BIOGRAPHY

Joe Alves, born in 1936 in San Leandro, California, is a renowned production designer and director whose work has left an indelible mark on the world of cinema, particularly in the realm of horror and science fiction. Best known for his art direction in the iconic Jaws franchise, Alves not only designed the mechanical sharks for the original Jaws (1975) but also directed the much-discussed Jaws 3-D (1983). Collectors are drawn to these films, especially the 3-D release, as it represents a unique blend of nostalgia and innovative filmmaking from the early '80s, making it a prized possession in any collection. Beyond the jaws of the iconic shark, Alves's talent shines in his collaborations with Steven Spielberg, notably in Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977), for which he won a BAFTA for Best Art Direction. His creative vision also brought to life the gritty, dystopian landscape of New York in John Carpenter's Escape from New York (1981). With each of these titles, Alves's contributions have become essential for collectors who appreciate the artistry and history behind physical media releases.
