BIOGRAPHY

Manuel Guimarães was a pioneering figure in Portuguese cinema, whose career spanned several decades and showcased his deep commitment to the art of filmmaking. Starting as a scenographer and illustrator, he made his directorial debut with the short documentary *O Desterrado* in 1949, followed by his first feature film, *Saltimbancos* (1952), which explored the vibrant life of a traveling circus. His work often faced the challenges of censorship, particularly with *Nazaré* (1952) and *Vidas Sem Rumo* (1956), both heavily edited, which only heightened their historical significance among collectors. Guimarães's later films, including the notable *O Crime da Aldeia Velha* (1964) and *O trigo e o Joio* (1965), displayed his ability to adapt literary works to the screen, further enriching his filmography. Collectors seek out his films not only for their artistic merit but also for their reflection of Portugal's socio-political landscape during a tumultuous time. His legacy, though cut short by illness, remains influential, with *Born with a Thunderstorm* (2017) serving as a poignant testament to his enduring impact on cinema.
