BIOGRAPHY

Shin Il-seon was a pioneering figure in the Korean film industry, whose career began at just 14 when she joined an opera troupe. Her breakout role came in 1926's "Arirang," directed by Na Un-gyu, where she portrayed Yeong-hee, the sister of the protagonist. This film not only solidified her status as a star but is also considered a cornerstone of Korean cinema, making any release of "Arirang" a coveted item among collectors. The impact of "Arirang" resonates deeply within the community, as it represents a significant cultural milestone during Korea's colonial period. After a brief hiatus due to marriage, Shin returned to the screen in the early 1930s, notably in "Crossroads of Youth." Her final appearance was in "Arirang Part 3" in 1936, adding to her legacy tied to the original film. Collectors often seek out her work to celebrate this rich history, and her limited appearances—especially in relation to the iconic "Arirang"—make her films essential additions to any serious collection.
