BIOGRAPHY

A titan of Hong Kong cinema, Tsui Hark burst onto the scene in the late 1970s and quickly became synonymous with the explosive creativity of the Hong Kong New Wave. His directorial vision, characterized by dazzling action, innovative camera work, and a relentless pace, reshaped the martial arts and action genres. Collectors covet his early work like *Zu: Warriors from the Magic Mountain* (1983) for its groundbreaking special effects and *Peking Opera Blues* (1986) for its genre-bending blend of action, comedy, and drama, often seeking out original VHS and laserdisc releases for their nostalgic value and unique mastering. Tsui's influence extended beyond the director's chair, as he produced some of the most iconic films of the 80s and 90s, including John Woo’s *A Better Tomorrow* (1986). His own films, like the seminal *Once Upon a Time in China* series (starting in 1991), starring Jet Li, are celebrated for revitalizing the wuxia genre and delivering some of Hong Kong cinema's most thrilling sequences. These films, alongside cult favorites like *The Blade* (1995), are highly sought after on various physical formats, from anamorphic DVDs to imported Blu-rays, as collectors strive to own the best presentations of his dynamic and often exhilarating filmography. His upcoming project, *Legends of the Condor Heroes: The Gallants* (2025), continues to excite fans eager for his next masterpiece.
