10½ is a gritty exploration of childhood and the darker sides of human nature. Set in a halfway house, the film gives us Tommy, a 10-year-old with a penchant for violence, caught in the system’s grip. The pacing is contemplative, allowing moments of despair to hang heavy in the air while we watch Gilles, his guardian, strive to see the light in this troubled kid. The performances feel raw and real, not overly polished, which adds to the film's unsettling atmosphere. There are no flashy effects here, just a heavy reliance on authentic emotion and the stark reality that some kids face. It’s that struggle for redemption, layered with societal commentary, that really makes it stand out.
