2012 is one of those disaster flicks that really leans into the chaos, and Emmerich knows how to make a spectacle. The pacing's relentless, with constant tension as the world crumbles around our characters. John Cusack holds it all together with his everyman charm, but it’s the visual effects that really steal the show. The scenes of destruction—California falling into the ocean, and those massive arks—are a mix of practical and CGI that kind of work. It doesn’t take itself too seriously, which I appreciate. The themes of survival and the human spirit are there, but it’s the sheer over-the-top nature of it all that really defines the experience.
Filmed in various global locations for realism.Features a blend of practical effects and CGI.Budget of approx. $200 million, one of the most expensive.Box office success, grossing over $800 million worldwide.
