6 Balloons is a raw look at addiction and family dynamics, all set against the backdrop of a single restless night in Los Angeles. Marja-Lewis Ryan crafts an atmosphere that's both tense and intimate, largely thanks to the performances, especially from Abbi Jacobson who carries a heavy emotional load. This film has a certain gritty realism that feels unvarnished; you can almost feel the weight of the world on the characters. The pacing is deliberate, allowing for moments of silence that speak volumes. And the presence of the young child adds layers of vulnerability and urgency, making it a complex narrative about love, desperation, and the lengths one would go for family. It’s not the kind of film that shies away from uncomfortable truths.
