A Dangerous Affair is quite the intriguing piece from 1931, directed by Edward Sedgwick. The interplay between Holt’s police lieutenant McHenry and Graves’ crime reporter Wally Cook sets a sharp tone, filled with witty banter that creates a unique atmosphere for a mystery. You really get a feel for the era, with the pacing keeping you engaged as they unravel the layers surrounding a lawyer’s murder - all while dealing with a colorful cast of heirs. The practical effects aren’t over-the-top, but they really serve the story, and the performances are solid, especially Holt and Graves who have some great chemistry. It's just one of those films that makes you appreciate the craft of early sound cinema.
