A Wrinkle in Time (2003) brings an interesting blend of drama, family dynamics, and science fiction. You’ve got Meg and her brother Charles Wallace, both on a quest to find their father, which gives it that emotional core. The atmosphere shifts between the mundane and the bizarre as they traverse the universe. John Kent Harrison’s direction has this almost dreamlike quality, and the pacing allows for some contemplative moments amidst the action. The performances, especially the kids, have an earnestness that really pulls you in. Plus, the practical effects, while they have that early 2000s feel, add a charm that CGI often lacks. Not your typical sci-fi fare, but definitely distinctive for its heart and imagination.
