Across the Universe is a visually striking film that combines elements of drama, fantasy, and romance, all set against the backdrop of the 1960s. Julie Taymor’s direction is really something else—she uses practical effects and vibrant imagery to create a dreamlike atmosphere. The film weaves in classic Beatles songs, which adds a layer of nostalgia while also pushing the narrative forward. The pacing can feel a bit disjointed at times, reflecting the chaotic era it depicts. Jude and Lucy’s love story is quite compelling, caught in the middle of the turbulent anti-war movement. The performances, especially from Jim Sturgess and Evan Rachel Wood, bring an earnestness that grounds the more surreal aspects of the film. It’s definitely a unique cinematic experience.
