Afrodite is an intriguing dive into the murky depths of both ocean and morality. Ludovica, our central character, is grappling with the weight of her forced loyalty to the Mafia, which really sets a grim tone. The underwater sequences, shot with practical effects, provide a hauntingly beautiful contrast to the violence above water. Sabrina, her unexpected ally, brings a layer of tension and intimacy to the narrative that I found quite compelling. The pacing occasionally drags, but it allows the viewer to really soak in the atmosphere of desperation and rebellion. Themes of freedom through the sea are palpable, and the performances ground the film, making it distinctly engaging in its portrayal of conflict and survival.
