Age of Summer is one of those charming indie flicks that captures that laid-back vibe of the 80s. The film's tone strikes a nice balance between comedy and drama, with a healthy dose of teenage romance that feels genuine rather than forced. Bill Kiely, the director, does a solid job of immersing us in the laid-back atmosphere of Hermosa Beach, where the struggles of fitting in with the Jr. Lifeguards mirror the complexities of young love and self-identity. The pacing is pretty relaxed, which allows the viewer to soak in the nuances of the characters' relationships. There’s a certain authenticity to the performances, especially from the lead, who navigates through those awkward summer days with a blend of determination and vulnerability. It's distinctive for its honest portrayal of adolescence, showcasing the little victories and defeats that come with it.
