So, this version of Aida from the Grand Théâtre de Genève is quite a departure from the norm. Phelim McDermott takes the classic opera and really twists it, giving us a fresh look at Ancient Egyptian culture while mixing in some contemporary themes. The pacing is interesting, not your usual grandiosity, more reflective and allows the music to breathe. There’s a boldness in the staging, they don't rely on the typical visual cues you'd expect, which honestly makes you think about our current world as much as the story itself. The performances are solid, with a cast that really brings depth to the characters. It's a thought-provoking interpretation that stands out in the opera landscape.
