Amadeus is a fascinating exploration of jealousy and genius, set against the backdrop of 18th-century Vienna. Miloš Forman’s direction really nails the opulence and decadence of the era, with striking costumes and a lush score. The pacing dips and swells, mirroring Salieri's turmoil as he grapples with his own mediocrity in contrast to Mozart's unrestrained talent. F. Murray Abraham’s performance as Salieri is something else—his quiet desperation and simmering rage are palpable. Meanwhile, Tom Hulce's portrayal of Mozart is exuberant, almost childlike, which adds layers to the rivalry. The film balances drama and rich historical context beautifully, making it a unique piece to have in any serious collection.
Released by Orion Pictures in 1984.Won 8 Academy Awards, including Best Picture.Shot in various locations in Prague for historical authenticity.Notable for its use of Mozart's actual compositions throughout.
