American History X is a heavy film that digs deep into themes of racism and redemption. Kaye’s direction is gritty, capturing the rawness of Derek's transformation. The black-and-white flashbacks contrast sharply with the color present, emphasizing the harsh realities of his past. Edward Norton delivers a raw performance as Derek, especially in that infamous curb stomp scene, which is both shocking and pivotal. The pacing can feel relentless, reflecting the urgency and despair of the narrative. It’s not a comfortable watch, but that’s what makes it striking. The moral complexities left me pondering long after the credits rolled. It’s just one of those films that really sticks with you, for better or worse.
