So, 'An American Tail' is really something. Don Bluth’s style is evident all over; the animation has that rich, hand-drawn feel that’s becoming rare. The story touches on themes of immigration and loneliness, which can hit pretty hard. Fievel’s journey speaks to anyone who's ever felt out of place. The pacing is nice too, with a mix of light-hearted moments and some genuinely emotional beats. And those songs? They definitely stick with you, particularly 'Somewhere Out There.' It’s a blend of adventure and comedy that has its darker undertones, which is part of what sets it apart from other animated films of the time. Plus, the attention to detail in the backgrounds is something I always appreciate in Bluth's work.
Original release on November 21, 1986.The film features a mix of traditional animation techniques.Music by James Horner adds emotional depth to the scenes.Fievel's character design was inspired by a young Don Bluth himself.
