An Ideal Husband (1999) captures the essence of Oscar Wilde's wit amidst a Victorian backdrop. The film really shines in its exploration of morality and social reputation, with Sir Robert Chiltern's facade of a perfect life slowly unraveling. The performances are solid, especially from Jeremy Northam as the conflicted Sir Robert and Rupert Everett as the charming Lord Goring. The pacing allows for tension to build, particularly in the moments when Mrs. Cheveley plays her hand. Visually, it’s lush—costumes and settings are meticulously crafted. There's a certain playful yet serious tone throughout, which makes it a rather distinct adaptation, blending comedy and drama seamlessly while examining themes of love, honesty, and societal expectation.
