Andrus Tammemäe's Frankenstein is a curious piece of cinema, that's for sure. Itâs a zero-budget Estonian comedic take on the classic Frankenstein story, but with a twist of homosexual themes and some decidedly adult elements. The pacing is erratic, which kind of adds to its charm, I suppose. The practical effects are laughable at times, but in a way that feels almost intentional, enhancing that parody vibe. The performances range from surprisingly earnest to downright absurd, which is part of what keeps it engaging. It really embodies that DIY spirit, which can be both endearing and cringe-worthy. Itâs not what youâd expect from a Frankenstein retelling, and thatâs what makes it distinctive in a sea of genre films.
