John Huston's 'Annie' is a curious blend of upbeat musical numbers and poignant moments. The pacing has a nice rhythm, bouncing between Annie's hopeful spirit and the darker undertones of her orphan life. A lot of the charm comes from the ensemble cast, especially Aileen Quinn as Annie, whose energy is infectious. And then there's Albert Finney as Warbucksâhis transformation from a cold businessman to a doting guardian is quite something. The practical effects, particularly those sets, give a tangible feel to the world of 1930s New York. Notably, the film leans heavily into that optimistic vibe, which is both its strength and a bit of a nostalgia trip for some. Definitely a unique take on the source material.
