Antikrist (2002) is an intriguing blend of music and visual storytelling, really. You have this dark, religious mystery opera that dives into modern society’s moral decay. The score by Rued Langgaard is haunting and rich, accompanied by the robust performances of the Royal Danish Opera and the Danish National Symphony Orchestra. Thomas Dausgaard conducts with a certain flair that’s palpable. The atmosphere is thick with a sense of impending doom, which keeps you on edge. The pacing might feel a bit slow for some, but it builds tension beautifully. Performances by Sten Byrel, Anne Margrethe Dahl, and John Lundgren are quite engaging, adding layers to the overall experience. It’s distinctive for its audacity and somber themes, a real reflection on contemporary issues through an operatic lens.
