Apartment 12 is one of those low-key gems from 2001 that really captures the struggles of an artist. Alex is a painter in a rut, and the film does a decent job of portraying that sense of despair blended with hope. The chemistry between him and Lori, his neighbor, is palpable—at times sweet, at times tense, which gives the film a nice subtle push-pull dynamic. The pacing meanders a bit in spots, which might not suit everyone, but it adds to that slice-of-life feel. It’s not flashy at all; the practical effects are minimal, but what stands out is the sincere performances that really anchor the story. The comedy often feels organic, intertwined with the romance, making it a distinctive watch.
