Arest is a rather haunting exploration of confinement and the weight of societal expectations. Set in the summer of '83, we follow architect Dinu Neagu, whose day at a nudist beach turns into a nightmare. The atmosphere is thick with tension, contrasting the initial freedom of the beach with the suffocating reality of his imprisonment. The pacing feels deliberate, almost claustrophobic, as we see Dinu navigate the oppressive environment of the police station, sharing a cell with Vali, a Security Service collaborator. It raises questions about trust, betrayal, and the personal costs of political oppression. The performances are raw, capturing the despair and absurdity of their situation, and the film’s practical effects ground it in a gritty realism that’s hard to shake off.
