Arisen is a curious little entry in the horror-mystery genre. The film follows teenage Lisa Walker on a search for her missing brother, and the atmosphere is thick with dread. The pacing has a kind of eerie build-up, drawing you in as she teams up with two detectives. There's this constant sense of impending doom, with evil lurking just out of sight, and it’s punctuated by some surprisingly effective practical effects that add a raw edge to the whole experience. Performances are decent, with a palpable sense of urgency that I think helps elevate the material. It’s that blend of teen angst and horror that feels distinct, and while it may not break new ground, it’s got a vibe that caught my attention.
