Arthur 2: On the Rocks has this curious blend of slapstick comedy and bittersweet moments. You’ve got Dudley Moore reprising his role as the charmingly irresponsible Arthur, but this time he’s really up against it. The whole sober-up-and-get-a-job thing, it adds this weight that wasn’t there in the first film. The pacing feels a bit uneven, especially when it jumps between light-hearted shenanigans and more serious themes of love and responsibility. Liza Minnelli as Linda brings a nice balance, her performance is both endearing and grounding. The practical effects in a few scenes, while not groundbreaking, have that tactile feel that is often lost in modern filmmaking. It’s distinct, for sure, even if it doesn’t quite capture the magic of the original.
