Ascension Oratorios is an interesting concert film that captures the essence of its live performance atmosphere really well. You can feel the energy of the Leipzig Bach Festival in 2004, and it’s kind of intimate despite being a larger event. The way Sigiswald Kuijken leads La Petite Bande and the Ex Tempore choir is particularly striking; his direction seems to draw out both the complexity and the beauty of the pieces performed. The vocal performances are noteworthy too, especially from the soprano Sophie Karthauser. I found the pacing to have a nice flow, balancing the grandeur of the orchestration with the delicate nuances of the singers. It’s a solid exploration of Bach’s work, even if it may not have the most well-known director behind it.
