So, 'Ashes' is a pretty heavy drama that really digs into grief and the struggle to find purpose after loss. Melanie, the main character, is just adrift after this horrific arson takes everything from her. The pacing is deliberately slow, which adds to the suffocating sense of despair, but then it shifts when she meets Katrin, who's pregnant and kind of symbolizes new beginnings. The performances are raw and really pull you into their emotional turmoil. It’s not flashy with effects, more about the characters' internal struggles. The atmosphere is thick with melancholy, but there's a hint of hope that creeps in towards the end, which is what makes it stand out.
