Astro Boy: The Last Day of Earth is an interesting entry in the animated sci-fi genre, blending themes of friendship and sacrifice against a backdrop of impending doom. The pacing has this nice ebb and flow; it takes its time developing Atom and Bem's relationship, which is quite touching. The animation is decent for its time, with some imaginative designs that really play into the whole rubbish planet concept. The moral dilemmas presented, especially regarding what it means to be alive—it's all pretty compelling. The film has a bit of a melancholic atmosphere that lingers, and while it may not have the most polished production, it certainly has heart and a unique charm that stands out. Not your typical Astro Boy fare for sure.
