Aswang is this interesting blend of comedy and horror that dives into Filipino mythology. Co-directed by Peque Gallaga and Lore Reyes, the film introduces us to the aswang, a shape-shifting creature that’s equal parts terrifying and darkly funny. The atmosphere is a mix of eerie and absurd, especially with its practical effects that are pretty charming in their own right. You’ve got the aswang transforming into a giant snake and a young woman, while performances by Alma Moreno and Lilia Cuntapay add layers to the storytelling. It plays with themes of fear and folklore, but doesn’t take itself too seriously, which is part of its charm. The pacing feels just right, keeping you hooked without dragging.
