At Daybreak is this intriguing little gem that really captures a tense atmosphere in what feels like a remote mountain setting. The film is all about the old janitor, who finds this frightened young woman, and immediately you can feel the weight of the situation. The pacing is slow but deliberate; it allows you to soak in the tension as the lover shows up and the janitor has to think on his feet. The performances are understated yet powerful; you can see the fear and desperation in the woman's eyes. The themes of protection and deception run deep here, and it makes for an engaging watch. It’s not flashy, but that’s part of its charm—very much a slice of raw human emotion.
Subtle tension builds throughout the film.Excellent use of a confined setting.Strong performances from a small cast.
