Avalanche Express is one of those quirky thrillers that feels like a throwback, even for its time. You’ve got Lee Marvin as the grizzled CIA agent alongside a surprisingly nuanced role from Maximilian Schell as the defecting Russian general. The train setting creates this claustrophobic tension that amps up the stakes, especially with the looming threat of both terrorists and, well, an avalanche. The practical effects are decent, and there's a certain charm to how it embraces the era’s action clichés without fully committing to them. The pacing has its ups and downs but keeps you engaged. Plus, it’s worth noting the score—adds a layer of suspense that complements the visuals nicely. A little dated, sure, but it has its own unique vibe.
