Backslide is an interesting blend of action and crime, with a distinct edge. The film follows Ryan, a clever high schooler, and his less-than-bright friend Justin. Their summer plans take a dark turn after they whip up an e-liquid from enigmatic instructions found deep in the dark web. The atmosphere feels tense, almost suffocating at times, as they navigate this underworld. The pacing, particularly in the second act, really ramps up, pulling the viewer into their increasingly dangerous decisions. I found the performances to be raw and believable, especially in the way the duo’s friendship is tested. It explores themes of ambition and morality, which makes it stand out amidst typical summer flicks.
