Backwoods (1996) is an interesting experiment in mood and exploration. While the direction is pretty much a mystery, the film thrives on its atmospheric contributions—lots of outdoor shots that create a sort of dreamy, almost ethereal vibe. The performances are decent, especially Tom Chase, who brings a certain depth to his character even when the dialogue falters. The pacing has its uneven moments, but there's something unmistakably hypnotic about those interactions. The voice-over bits, particularly the 'Oh, Yeah's, can be a bit grating, but they also add a layer of quirkiness that some might find charming. It's a unique slice of its time, more of a curiosity than anything else.
Backwoods is somewhat scarce in terms of physical media, which makes it a point of interest for collectors digging into the niche corners of 90s adult cinema. Its unique atmosphere and the blend of outdoor locations with intimate scenes create a distinctive feel that stands out. The film has seen limited releases, so finding it in good condition can be a challenge, but it often pops up at collector conventions or online marketplaces.
