Balwaan is a bit of a time capsule from early '90s Indian cinema. Deepak Anand's direction gives it that raw, gritty feel, especially in the action sequences. You’ve got a brave cop battling a powerful gangster, which is pretty standard fare, but the performances here have a certain weight to them. The ambient sounds of Mumbai and the practical effects hold up surprisingly well for the era. There’s an interesting use of music that complements the pacing – it drags a bit in the middle but picks up nicely towards the end. It's not groundbreaking by any stretch, but it’s solidly entertaining if you're into that blend of action and crime drama from this period.
