Bastard is one of those indie horror flicks that really slams you into its gritty, uncomfortable atmosphere. The premise is intriguing, with five characters who all have their own dark backgrounds. The newlywed serial killers are a chilling touch, and they balance the tension with the more vulnerable figures like the depressed cop and the secretive runaways. The pacing keeps you on edge, especially as the masked killer's presence looms larger, creating a sense of dread that permeates the isolated mountain town setting. Practical effects add a raw edge that enhances the horror, and the performances are surprisingly strong for such a low-key release. It’s a messy little gem that captures a certain bleakness, but that’s what makes it stand out in the genre.
