Battle for the Planet of the Apes is a curious finale for the series. Directed by J. Lee Thompson, it tries to wrap up the saga of Caesar with a mix of social commentary and action. You can really feel the budget constraints here, especially with the practical effects and makeup, but some of the set designs are quite impressive. The pacing feels a bit off, like they were trying to cram too much into the runtime. Roddy McDowall gives a solid performance as Caesar, as always, and the conflict with General Aldo adds a layer of tension. It brings the themes of coexistence and conflict to the forefront but doesn’t quite land as strongly as its predecessors.
Released by 20th Century Fox in 1973.Runtime: 90 minutes; a bit shorter than earlier films.Features practical effects by John Chambers, notable for makeup.Filmed in California with a more limited budget compared to others.
