Bernard Alba's Household is a pretty intense adaptation of Lorca's play, directed by Fattoh Nashaty. The atmosphere is thick with tension from the get-go, as Bernarda's oppressive mourning rules create this claustrophobic feeling. You really get drawn into the lives of those five daughters; their struggles for freedom and identity amidst their mother’s strict control are palpable. The pacing moves deliberately, almost suffocatingly so, which heightens the emotional stakes. Performances are quite striking, especially the way the actresses embody the weight of tradition and unfulfilled desires. There’s something haunting about how the domestic space transforms into a battleground of wills, revealing deep familial rifts. It’s a unique take, really, showcasing the darker sides of grief and control.
