Birds (2009) is a curious blend of whimsy and melancholy. The animation has this distinctive hand-drawn quality that really lends itself to the often surreal situations the characters find themselves in. The pacing is quite unique, meandering like the thoughts of the old woman obsessed with her feathered friends. The theme of escapism comes through strongly, especially with her son believing he can fly. It’s almost dreamlike in its execution, not rushing to get anywhere but rather allowing viewers to soak in the oddities of their world. Practical effects are minimal, but the way the birds are animated feels alive, almost like they're characters in their own right. The performances, though not traditional voice acting, carry an emotional weight that resonates well beyond the screen.
