Bite the Bullet is a fascinating blend of action and western adventure, set against the backdrop of a grueling horse race. The film has this gritty realism, capturing the struggles of its diverse cast—each character feels distinct and layered. You’ve got the fierce Miss Jones, the stoic Mexican, and the old cowboy who feels like he’s seen it all. The pacing is pretty methodical, almost meditative at times, allowing the tension to build naturally as the race unfolds. Richard Brooks does a solid job with the practical effects; the horses really take center stage, and you can feel the intensity of the race. Performances are definitely engaging, especially from Gene Hackman and Janice Rule—they elevate what could have been a standard adventure into something with more depth.
