Black Widow (2008) is one of those lesser-known thrillers that has a tangible sense of atmosphere. Mastroianni's direction creates a slow-burn tension that really pulls you in, especially with the moody cinematography. The performances, particularly from the lead, are solid and add depth to the character dynamics, especially Mel's obsessive pursuit of the truth. The plot twists are engaging, though not overly convoluted, which I appreciate. It plays with themes of trust and deception in relationships, and the mystery unfolds at a satisfying pace. There's an almost noir-like quality to the storytelling that stands out, even if it doesn't shout for attention.
Released direct-to-video in the US.Shot on location with practical effects.Features a score that complements the thriller tone.
