Blackburn is one of those films that captures a chilling atmosphere right from the start. Five college friends, trapped in a ghost town with a dark past, find themselves in a real nightmare when they seek shelter in the Blackburn Asylum. The pacing is pretty relentless; once the action kicks off, it rarely lets up. The tension builds nicely, and the practical effects have that gritty feel that makes the horror visceral. Performances are solid, especially as the characters start turning against each other, which adds another layer to the dread. There’s something haunting about the setting, too – the abandoned asylum feels almost like a character itself, steeped in its own tragic history. It’s a decent little horror flick that doesn’t take itself too seriously but still delivers the scares.
