Bling (2016) is this quirky animated feature that really captures that blend of whimsy and earnestness. It follows Sam, a theme park mechanic, who's stuck in a dream-filled rut, yearning for his childhood sweetheart, Sue. The premise of winning her heart with a bling ring feels both sweet and a bit naïve, which adds to the film's charm. The pacing has a nice, light rhythm, making it easy to get swept up in Sam's awkward attempts to impress Sue. Visually, it’s kind of a mixed bag, but the character designs have a certain charm. I mean, who can resist a villain named Oscar that brings this over-the-top flair? It’s got a certain fun vibe, though it doesn't quite land as strongly as it hopes to in theme and execution.
