Blue Spring is this gritty dive into high school life and the darker side of youth culture. Toshiaki Toyoda captures a raw atmosphere, the kind where you can almost feel the tension in the air. Kujo, the protagonist, is thrust into a leadership role in a gang, and while that sounds thrilling, the film explores his disillusionment with the violence and toxicity of it all. The pacing is a bit languid, but it really works to build that sense of malaise. You get this powerful sense of conflict within Kujo, like he’s stuck in a cage made of his own choices. The performances feel real, almost like you’re peeking through a window into someone’s troubled psyche. It’s a unique take on adolescence and power—or the lack thereof.
