Book and Sword is an interesting piece, really. It condenses a TV series into a feature, which gives it this unique pacing. The action is pretty solid, with practical effects that have a grit to them, fitting the historical setting. You get this palpable tension in the battles against the Qing Dynasty, and the performances evoke a sense of urgency, especially within the Han Chinese resistance, the Red Flower Society. There's a rawness in the way the characters navigate their struggles, which is refreshing. It feels like it tries to capture the heart of rebellion, and though it doesn't always hit the mark, the atmosphere it creates is worth discussing, especially for enthusiasts of historical action flicks.
