Borderland is one of those gritty films that really plays with the sense of dread. The use of practical effects over CGI gives it a raw, raw feel, which I appreciate. Zev Berman's direction has this unrelenting tension, especially as the group of friends goes from carefree to something sinister pretty fast. The performances of the leads, particularly when Phil finds himself at the mercy of the cult, are pretty chilling. It mixes crime with horror in a way that feels grounded but still has that over-the-top edge typical of early 2000s horror. The atmosphere—like a bad trip gone wrong—stays with you long after it’s over. Definitely has a unique vibe, not your run-of-the-mill slasher flick.
