Bwakaw is an interesting blend of comedy and drama that really captures the nuances of life's later stages. It follows Rene, a grumpy old retiree who prefers solitude over human interaction, and his journey towards self-acceptance regarding his sexuality. The pacing feels relaxed, almost meandering at times, which allows you to really soak in the atmosphere of his small town life. There's a raw honesty in the performances; the lead does a nice job of conveying Rene's internal struggle without being overly dramatic. The film's tone is both light-hearted and poignant, tackling heavy themes with a gentle touch. It’s not flashy or effects-driven, but its simplicity and depth make it a memorable watch.
