Call of the Wild (2009) isn’t your typical adventure flick. You’ve got this self-absorbed kid, Ryann, who heads to Montana to hang with her grandpa, Bill. The pacing is gentle, almost reflective, allowing the bond between Ryann and Buck, the wolf-dog, to build. It’s not just about the girl saving the dog from a nasty dogsledder; it’s about her journey towards understanding loyalty and love. The practical effects used for Buck are pretty decent, blending well with the real landscapes of Montana. Performances are varied; Ryann’s character arc feels a bit exaggerated at times, but it captures that childhood innocence. Definitely has its quirks, but there’s something oddly charming about it.
