So, Candleman: Part One dives right into a gritty atmosphere, with this small town of Hillsdale feeling more claustrophobic as the murder mystery unfolds. The dynamic between Connor McKenney, who's green and trying to find his footing, and Able Simmons, the weathered detective with a lot of baggage, adds a nice layer of tension. The pacing keeps you on edge, sometimes slow, then suddenly, bam! A gruesome discovery. The practical effects are quite impressive, bringing these ritualistic murders to life in a way that CGI just can't match. The film grapples with themes of darkness, both literal and metaphorical. There’s a real sense of dread that lingers after the credits roll, which is refreshing in the age of jump scares. It’s a solid start to what could be an interesting series.
