Charmides, directed by Gregory J. Markopoulos in 1949, really digs into the philosophical dialogue of Plato, capturing that essence in a unique way. The film has this almost hypnotic pacing that allows you to really soak in the ideas being presented. The atmosphere is reflective, almost dreamlike, which works nicely with how the dialogue unfolds. There’s a lot of close-ups and intimate shots that just pull you in. The performances feel genuine, almost like you're eavesdropping on a real conversation about virtue and self-knowledge. It’s all quite different from typical dramas of its time, creating a meditative space that invites you to ponder rather than simply consume. Definitely a piece that stands out for its thoughtfulness.
