Christmas Eve at Oper Frankfurt is quite a unique adaptation of Nikolai Gogol's short story. Set in the quaint Ukrainian village of Dikanka, it’s steeped in folklore and has this whimsical atmosphere that really draws you in. The pacing can feel a little uneven at times, but the music really lifts the entire production, creating this enchanting backdrop for Wakula's plight. Speaking of Wakula, his journey to win Oksana’s heart, intertwined with a deal with the devil, gives the entire piece a blend of dark humor and romance. The practical effects used to depict his flight to the capital are surprisingly effective, adding to the enchanting, almost magical realism of the piece. The performances, though not from a big-name director, manage to capture that chaotic spirit of love and desperation really well.
